The Violet Sabrewing, Campylopterus hemileucurus, is one of the hummingbirds you can photograph on our cloud forest tour, March 27 - April 5, 2019.
Panama has 59 different hummingbirds, and the Violet Sabrewing is one of them. The bird is around 15 cm long, and it has this glittering violet plumage. Beautiful! The Violet Sabrewing can normally be seen in foothills and highlands from 900m up to 1650 m. This image is taken at 2400 m, close to the cabins we use on the tour. Read more about the tour in the Tour Program! Best regards Øyvind Martinsen In the rainforests of Panama there are many huge trees! This year there are many opportunities to join us on a photo adventure in Panama. Below you can find the dates, and you can read more about the tours in the Tour Program.
On are tours there will be lots of photographic opportunities. Wildlife, landscapes and forestscapes, macro, or to interpret nature as art. We have arranged everything for you, and the creative part is up to you. We are there to guide and help you, so you can come home with good photographs, nice memories and new experiences. I have explored the beautiful Panama nature since 2004, and together with my Panamanian wife Zizza Gordon, we organize tours and help other photographers in the Panama nature. The image above is a self-portrait from a tour in the rainforest of Soberania national park. Amazing nature!

A few years ago I worked on several documentary projects in Panama. One of them was about livestock. This image shows three young cows jumping off a small truck in the Cocle province. In this image I handheld the camera to be able to shift my compositions fast according to the action going on. When you are working on images like this you have to be prepared and you must adjust the camera settings in advance. What types of settings are important in an image like this? The number one is shutterspeed. I wanted to freeze the action so I selected ISO 640. That setting was sufficient to achieve fast shutterspeeds according to the strong midday sunlight. I also used aperture priority. Why did I do that? Through aperture priority I can control the depth of field in the image, and I used f/8 in this case. I used the Carl Zeiss 18mm lens on a Canon EOS 5D camera, and at f/8 setting I have depth of field from about 1 m to infinity. The shutterspeed was then controlled by my ISO settings as mentioned above. The shutterspeed I achieved by these settings was 1/2000 second. That is sufficient to freeze the action. This image is in sunlight, but what if it was cloudy weather? What about the fast shutterspeeds then? In cloudy weather you just adjust the ISO settings to a higher value, and the shutterspeed will adjust according to the new ISO setting. I very often use the same settings in wildlife photography, and you can also use this method in sports photography. If you want to learn more about Outdoor Photography, check out my Online Photo Cours in the menu to the left. Best regards Øyvind Martinsen I have created an online photo course. It is a 6 weeks training program, and you can study and practice when you have the time. It can be a good preparation for one of our photo tours in Panama. You can read more details and see a welcome video under "Online Photo Course" in the meny to the left. The course has no expiry date and future updates will also be available for you.
Best regards Øyvind Martinsen PS! Below you can read two testimonials from participants in the course: "Dear Øyvind Want to take this opportunity to thank you and to congratulate you for your efforts to create the On-Line Outdoor Photography Accelerator Course. It has been a superb opportunity to experience the digital world of photography and the sharing your exceptional photographic expertise with tips and recommendations which have been very refreshing considering that for years I experienced the traditional old school dark room and now the usage of Adobe Light-room being it my first experience on digital darkroom. Digital photography introduction has been amazing and you can feel confident that the new knowledge you provided in this past 6 weeks will lead to obtain better results to my to my future photographic experience. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Yours Truly Ivan Ortiz Gamboa, Panama" ------------------------------------------------- "I’m a Norwegian outdoor photographer primarily working with landscapes. I know Øyvind as a very good teacher as I have participated in many of his outdoor courses. Øyvind’s online course has significantly contributed to further development of my photography. The course covers many essential items that are often not found in other photography courses, such as development of personal perception, ethics, projects and selling your pictures. In addition there are videos connected to all subjects combined with really good explanations. For me these videos with Øyvind’s comments acts as both tutorials as well as personal supervision. In my opinion this is very useful and a significant educational strength of the course. I strongly recommend this course to both photographers aiming at further developing their understanding and skills as well as beginners in the trade." Bjørn Gjervan, Trondheim, Norway WELCOME TO 2019!
This is the first day in a new year! Behind us is another year, and we can start fresh again! Maybe you want to develop your skills further in outdoor photography. One first step can be to join the Outdoor Photography Accelerator online program. Over the last 4 months of 2018 I developed the Outdoor Photography Accelerator online photo course. I have created a learning platform so you can learn in your own home, and practice close to where you live. I have been teaching outdoor photography in classes, and also one-on-one, over several years. That worked fine, but my new online learning platform is even better. The course has no expiry date, and you can always go back and watch a video or read an article whenever you want. For me it is also a better way to pass on my knowledge to you. After you have completed the Outdoor Photography Accelerator, you are automatically qualified to join us on a photo tour in Panama. You can read about the tours in the tour program. The tours have a maximum of 6 participants to ensure high quality and good photo opportunities for each participant. The tours are fun, educational, and you will further expand your creativity and develop you photographic skills in beautiful environments. I wish you a Happy New Year! Best regards Øyvind Martinsen BETWIXT AND BETWEEN
Today is the last day in this year. In a few hours it is not 2018 or 2019. We are betwixt and between the two years. Magic things can happen when you are in the not so defined zone betwixt and between. Photographically magic things can happen too. This image is taken in another betwixt and between zone; the twilight zone. It is not day, and not night. The light can be magic, and the mood in an image can reflect that magic. The undefined magic is one of my driving forces in outdoor photography. The nature never stops surprising me, and capturing magic moments in the camera when I am experiencing them out in the field fuels my energy. This is the last post this year. I wish you all a Happy New Year! Let’s do some more magic next year! Best regards Øyvind Martinsen KAYAKING
I made this image in September 2010 on a kayak trip in the lake Vansjø, Norway. The image is a self-portrait. How can you create an image like this? I attached the tripod with tape in front of the kayak. I used a Canon 16-35mm lens on my Canon EOS 5D camera. The camera settings were; ISO 200, f/9, 1/15 second. But how did I trigger the camera release button? First, I set the camera in 10 seconds self-timer mode. To trigger the release button I used a remote release. I kept it inside a watertight plastic bag, and I could push the release button from my position in the kayak. I love the light on this quiet and clear autumn evening. I have explored the lake Vansjø since I was a young boy, and I have also published a book about it. The title of the book is: “Vansjø – en unik naturperle”. You can learn more creative methods in my Online Outdoor Accelerator Course. Read more under the "Online Course" here on this site! Best regards Øyvind Martinsen SIMPLICITY
On our road to strong compositions, and the strongest way of seeing, is simplicity. Simplicity in the compositions is one thing; another thing is how we plan and how we move out in the wilderness. This image is from Telemark, Norway, in April 2009. This was my camp for two nights, and I was in a very good position for various landscape photographs. I used my one-man tent, and the weight of the tent is only 1,5 kg. The weight of all my gear including photo equipment was around 15 kg, and I carried everything in my backpack. I was able to travel light, and move with the light. Make it simple to pack your gear, and when you come home after a trip, unpack and make it easy to find your gear again. The easier you make it for yourself, the easier it is to go out in the field. If you are more out in the field, the more good photographs you will get. It is that simple. Best regards Øyvind Martinsen PHOTO TOUR IN PANAMA This year we have one photo tour in beautiful Panama, and the tour date is July 7-19, 13 days/ 12 nights.
