BETWIXT AND BETWEEN
Today is the last day in this year. In a few hours it is not 2018 or 2019. We are betwixt and between the two years. Magic things can happen when you are in the not so defined zone betwixt and between. Photographically magic things can happen too. This image is taken in another betwixt and between zone; the twilight zone. It is not day, and not night. The light can be magic, and the mood in an image can reflect that magic. The undefined magic is one of my driving forces in outdoor photography. The nature never stops surprising me, and capturing magic moments in the camera when I am experiencing them out in the field fuels my energy. This is the last post this year. I wish you all a Happy New Year! Let’s do some more magic next year! Best regards Øyvind Martinsen KAYAKING
I made this image in September 2010 on a kayak trip in the lake Vansjø, Norway. The image is a self-portrait. How can you create an image like this? I attached the tripod with tape in front of the kayak. I used a Canon 16-35mm lens on my Canon EOS 5D camera. The camera settings were; ISO 200, f/9, 1/15 second. But how did I trigger the camera release button? First, I set the camera in 10 seconds self-timer mode. To trigger the release button I used a remote release. I kept it inside a watertight plastic bag, and I could push the release button from my position in the kayak. I love the light on this quiet and clear autumn evening. I have explored the lake Vansjø since I was a young boy, and I have also published a book about it. The title of the book is: “Vansjø – en unik naturperle”. On our road to strong compositions, and the strongest way of seeing, is simplicity. Simplicity in the compositions is one thing; another thing is how we plan and how we move out in the wilderness. This image is from Telemark, Norway, in April 2009. This was my camp for two nights, and I was in a very good position for various landscape photographs. I used my one-man tent, and the weight of the tent is only 1,5 kg. The weight of all my gear including photo equipment was around 15 kg, and I carried everything in my backpack. I was able to travel light, and move with the light. Make it simple to pack your gear, and when you come home after a trip, unpack and make it easy to find your gear again. The easier you make it for yourself, the easier it is to go out in the field. If you are more out in the field, the more good photographs you will get. It is that simple.
