HERE IS WHAT I GOT: I have created an online photography course, and you can study from your home and when you have the time. You can also practice in your nearby surroundings. The course has no expiry date. HERE IS WHAT THE COURSE DOES FOR YOU: In the beginning of the course you will overcome the obstacles that stop most people, and you will learn about the basic stuff. When the foundation is laid, you will continue and learn about landscape photography, wildlife photography, macro photography, how to interpret nature as art, and documentary work and how to tell stories with pictures. You will also learn to organize and edit your photographs with Adobe Lightroom. As a bonus you will learn about project work, and how to sell your work. HERE IS A TESTIMONIAL FROM A HAPPY CLIENT: "I’m a Norwegian outdoor photographer primarily working with landscapes. I know Øyvind as a very good teacher as I have participated in many of his outdoor courses. Øyvind’s online course has significantly contributed to further development of my photography. The course covers many essential items that are often not found in other photography courses, such as development of personal perception, ethics, projects and selling your pictures. In addition there are videos connected to all subjects combined with really good explanations. For me these videos with Øyvind’s comments acts as both tutorials as well as personal supervision. In my opinion this is very useful and a significant educational strength of the course. I strongly recommend this course to both photographers aiming at further developing their understanding and skills as well as beginners in the trade." Bjørn Gjervan, Trondheim, Norway SOUNDS GREAT? If you look at for example an iphone, it was not a new creation when the first model entered the market. It existed long before it was launched as an Iphone. The Iphone consists of materials from nature, and the phone was created because Steve Jobs had the idea and the vision to create that type of phone. No one has ever seen an original painting. Vincent van Gogh once said: ”First I dream my painting, then I paint my dream”. The original idea was in the mind of the artist. It is important with visions in nature photography also. A finished photography is not a replica of the “real” world. (Maybe for those who has a stiff and technical approach to the field) But for us who lives in the visionary realm it is different. When I go out in the field to take for example landscape photography I bring with me an idea in my head, a vision, about what I am after. It can be based upon local knowledge about the location I am in, combined with a landscape analysis who contains many elements like seasons, weather, ice conditions, time of day, water levels, snow conditions, and the elements on the location, and so on. It takes time to learn a location and its different qualities and to get into the spirit of the place. In addition to field knowledge, I have learned the creative development tool Adobe Lightroom. I think it is the best tool for outdoor photographers. When I take my picture out in the field, and know how I can develop my photograph to match my inner visions. It takes time to become a master, but the more you practice the better you get. Enclosed are two photographs. It is the same image. One is an undeveloped RAW-file, and the other is developed. The undeveloped image is dull and lacks contrast, color, and tone. The developed image is adjusted after my ideas and visions, based on the knowledge about the natural world, and how I can develop the image in Adobe Lightroom. All the final elements are in the final image, but you must learn how to develop your photograph. In the days of film we could buy films with different qualities in tone, contrast, and color. A RAW-file contains all the old films in one file, and you can develop it in what direction you prefer. Equal to Steve Jobs Iphone, all the elements were in the original photograph, but I had to visualize the final image to develop it where I wanted it according to my vision. In the development process I do not add something that was not there in the original photograph, or subtract anything that was in the original photograph. That is why I compose my image in the camera out in the field, and avoid including elements that I do not want in my image. All the wanted elements, as seen in the final photograph, are in the original photograph, and I just had to refine the image in the development process. Many people say, “I am not creative”. That is nonsense. Everyone has a creative force within, but they do not allow it to shine through because of the everyday noise, activities, and indoctrinated and unconscious behavioral patterns. If you reduce the everyday noise, walk away from it, and then you can unlock and release your creative force. Most of the physical world is explored here on earth but within yourself you have unexplored continents if your dare explore them. They are hidden behind the everyday non-productive things you do on a daily basis. That is why a photo tour or workshop is and arena for creativity. There you can do only the real thing, be creative, expand your visions, and take new photographs. Here are the camera settings I used on the image: ISO 50, aperture f/22, 0,5 second exposure time. Equipment: Canon EOS 5D mk2, Canon 16-35mm lens, cable release, Gitzo carbon tripod with BH55 ballhead from Really Right Stuff. In addition I used a 2 stop hard edge Galen Rowell graduated neutral density filter to balance the light. In my online photo course, The Outdoor Photographer Accelerator, you can learn about Adobe Lightroom and other topics within the outdoor photography field. If you join one of my photo tours or workshop, you will be given free access to the course. You can also buy the course and study on your own in your home, and practice in your nearby surroundings. Sounds like a stretch? There are no truths in outdoor photography, and you will learn step by step throughout the 6 modules in the course. You can also ask questions inside the course. If you join one of our tours or workshops we will be there and help you in whatever photographic area you want to improve. Locked up inside you there are ideas and visions, but maybe you don’t see them right know. But once you start you will surprise yourself, and you will need a telescope to look back at the spot you are today. Read more about our programs here on the site. To your success, Øyvind Martinsen Here is great news!
All photo tour participants will be given free access to the online photo course, The Outdoor Photographer Accelerator, created by Øyvind Martinsen. The course can be a good preparation for our tours and to expand your creative visions. The value of the course is 895$, and you can read more about it in another section on this page. See you in Panama! To your success, Øyvind Martinsen CAN A FLOWER RECALL MEMORY?
I took this picture in Cerro Hoya national park in Panama. Cerro Hoya is the least visited and explored national park in Panama, and there are new interesting opportunities to explore. After 2 hours hike uphill inside the rainforest I discovered this beautiful and strange flower. I was with the Norwegian photographer Ole Bjørn Engen, whom I was guiding on a 3 weeks photo tour to various locations in Panama. It was his fourth tour with me in Panama, and he was a dream client. The tour was already a success when I picked him up at the airport. He arrived full of energy and ready for new photo explorations. Inside the rainforest the light can be a little shady and dim, so I wanted to try a creative approach to how I lit up the flower. I mounted the macro flash in front of the macro lens. The flash has 2 independent flashes, and they can be positioned and angled in various positions. When I exposed the frame I held one flash behind the leaf, giving me an interesting backlight, and the other flash was mounted on the lens, and that gave me the necessary front light. Whatever you are working on photographically, be naive and creative and try different angles and approaches to your photographs. Remember, there are no truths in creative work. Here is the equipment I used on this image: Canon EOS 5D mk2, Canon 180mm macro lens , Canon cable release, Canon MT-24ex macro flash, Gitzo carbon tripod with a ballhead, BH55, from Really Right Stuff. The camera settings was: ISO 800, f/29, 1/250 second shutterspeed. One thing is the image itself; another is the experience connected to the image. If you think photographically you must separate your own experiences from the photographs, because the viewer of your photographs does not have your experiences from the time you took the image. But your own experiences, in addition to your photographs, can be the engine and energy that drives you out in nature time and again to see and photograph the nature in your own way. We, who are into outdoor photography, have more than a technical approach to nature. We are being inspired by the great master; Nature itself. To be inspired means to be “in spirit”. If you are inspired by nature is it because your true frequency vibrates on the same level as the nature. That will inspire you for new tours and experiences. Ole Bjørn Engen died last summer. But when I look over the images I took on the tours I guided him, I go right back to the spirit from that trips, and all the jokes and experiences return as if I was back there. That gives me new motivation. Not necessarily to repeat earlier experiences, but to merge my frequency with nature, to be “in spirit”. Albert Einstein wrote: ”Match the frequency of the reality you want, and you can not help but get that reality.” Before you go out in the field try to match your frequency with the nature and what you want, and as Bob Proctor said it: “Have a mind that is open for everything, but attached to nothing.” To you success, Øyvind Martinsen |
